International Visual Literacy Association Announces Education Award Winner
San Diego, California – Savannah Dodd, PhD., was awarded the International Visual Literacy Association’s (IVLA) Education Award at the 56th annual conference held in San Diego, California this October.
This award is given to members of the Association in recognition of their significant contribution to visual literacy through exemplary professional contribution to visual literacy through exemplary teaching, educational outreach, and/or the development of model curricula and other educational materials. Savannah Dodd has made significant strides toward the promotion of visual literacy education as the Founder and Director of the Photography Ethics Centre. She has taught over 3,000 individuals through online courses, workshops, and lectures. In addition to teaching through the traditional channels, she uses a wide range of multimedia for educational outreach. For example, Savannah hosts The Photo Ethics Podcast where she interviews photographers, editors, and others working with photorealistic visual media about the ethics of their visual practices. The podcast routinely has over 5,000 monthly listeners. Savannah has ensured that this podcast represents a diversity of experiences by seeking out the perspectives of Black photographers, disabled photographers, female photographers, and others whose perspectives have often been marginalized. She currently holds a Practitioner’s Appointment at the Centre for Creative Ethnography where she is analyzing the first four seasons of this podcast to consolidate knowledge generated through these episodes into a concise and accessible document. Since 2019, Savannah has organized an annual Photography Ethics Symposium, bringing together experts to discuss a hot-button issue. Past topics include: intersectional storytelling, the myth of objectivity, and documenting and exhibiting vulnerability. This year, she is developing a symposium programme to tackle the ethics of AI imagery. Savannah is also an invited speaker at a range of events, including the 2023 TEDx event at Queen’s University Belfast. The recording of her talk, “Changing the world with visual media ethics,” has been viewed over 800 times. Finally, through the work she has done with the Photography Ethics Centre since 2017, she has developed a novel approach to photography ethics education, which she introduced at the 2024 Society for Photographic Education Conference in a lecture titled “Reframing ethics: A principles-based approach to photography ethics education.”
Winners are selected by an awards committee composed of IVLA members. For any questions in the meantime, contact Dr. Kazuyo Kubo, Awards Committee Chair, at kkubo [at] lesley.edu.
